Elective courses

Every year the Scientific Training Programme organizes different advanced courses.

Below you can find information on upcoming courses.

At any time PhD students can suggest a topic for a course, and at least once a year, there is an open consultation for the students to decide which topics are most relevant.

PhD students can also register to attend courses offered by the University of Vienna (course directory). In particular, the Center for Doctoral Studies offers several workshops on transferable skills.

In addition, the scientific facilities organize regular training courses (for example: Bio-optics; programming, statistics).

Writing for publication

Training consultant: Iain Patten

September 18-21, 2017 OR March 5-8, 2018

The primary measure of your progress as a scientist is your publication output. To achieve the highest standards, it is not enough to obtain interesting results—you must also ensure that they are published in an appropriate journal. Competition to publish in high-impact journals, however, is fierce. It is therefore essential that early career researchers understand how to maximize their chances of success and negotiate the publication process effectively.
This 4-day workshop will equip participants with key skills in writing for publication:

1. Structuring articles

2. Choosing an appropriate journal

3. Ensuring clarity and readability

4. Managing the submission and review process

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to make rational choices about how to maximize their likelihood of success in research publication. Throughout the training, emphasis will be placed on applying the principles to participants’ own work. In this way, participants can begin to lay the foundations for the development of their own articles, even if they are at an early stage in their research.
